Background of the study
Health insurance is widely recognized as a mechanism to improve access to healthcare by reducing the financial barriers associated with medical treatment. In Uyo Local Government Area, expanding health insurance coverage can significantly enhance the utilization of both preventive and curative health services. Empirical evidence suggests that increased insurance coverage leads to higher healthcare service utilization and improved health outcomes (Ebenebe, 2023). However, challenges such as low enrollment rates, limited benefit packages, and administrative inefficiencies often undermine these potential benefits (Okon, 2024). Recent studies indicate that effective health insurance schemes not only protect individuals from catastrophic health expenditures but also encourage regular health-seeking behavior (Ikpe, 2025). This study seeks to assess the current level of health insurance coverage and evaluate its influence on access to healthcare services, with the goal of identifying strategies to increase coverage and improve service delivery.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential benefits of health insurance, many residents of Uyo face challenges in accessing quality healthcare due to low enrollment rates, inadequate benefit coverage, and bureaucratic inefficiencies. These issues create significant barriers to effective healthcare utilization and necessitate an evaluation of the current health insurance landscape to identify opportunities for improvement (Ebenebe, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the level of health insurance coverage in Uyo.
To examine the impact of health insurance on healthcare access.
To recommend strategies to improve insurance uptake and effectiveness.
Research questions:
What is the current level of health insurance coverage in Uyo?
How does health insurance influence healthcare access?
What measures can enhance the effectiveness of health insurance schemes?
Research Hypotheses:
Higher health insurance coverage improves healthcare access.
Administrative inefficiencies hinder the benefits of health insurance.
Policy reforms can enhance the effectiveness of health insurance.
Significance of the study
This study informs policymakers and health practitioners on the critical role of health insurance in expanding healthcare access. The findings will provide a foundation for developing strategies to increase enrollment, improve benefit delivery, and ultimately enhance healthcare outcomes in Uyo.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the assessment of health insurance coverage and its influence on healthcare access in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
Definitions of terms:
Health Insurance Coverage: The extent to which individuals are enrolled in health insurance schemes.
Healthcare Access: The ability of individuals to obtain necessary medical services.
Preventive Services: Health services aimed at disease prevention.
